Welcome to our Weblog! Here you get an impression from our work. Hope you'll enjoy weblogging with us! Every Thursday afternoon we come together as CMI team and workers to read in the Bible and discuss God´s Word. Materials designed to guide through the discussion of specific topics or books of the Bible have been of great help to generate lively talks. Interesting questions arise quite often. Sometimes we realize where culture and belief have been too much mixed up and it makes us search for the essentials and actual truth. Kenyan Christians for example strictly don´t take alcohol. However, in the Bible we read that Jesus not only drank wine but even actively turned water into vine. Our bible study has proved to be the right setting to address sensitive issues and bring up some new ideas and insights.
Preparations for children´s camp Today schools closed for Easter Holiday. To avoid our children idling at home too much we again organize a four day children´s camp starting on 19th April. The preparations are on. Our Bible Story will be about ´Joseph´, our team has spent a good time on studying his life and character. Thanks to some creative minds in Germany there will be some arts and crafts to do for the kids and so much more. After a three months´ dry season the rains usually begin to rain again in April. Just on time we were able to plant maize on our field next to the health center. Like most Kenyans we do not have any agricultural machines and therefore we depend on simple methods and manpower. It was hard work in the hot sun, but we hope that our labor was not in vain and we´ll get a good harvest to benefit our children in the Child Care Program.
This year we plan to complete the construction of our health center in Sambocho village. We utilized the last days of dry season (and dry roads) to start preparations and transported sand and ballast to the site. Three containers that have to be insulated and roofed had to be moved aside to create space for a slap of the new hospital block. Since we didn´t have a crane to lift them, we once again depended on simple methods to achieve our goal. The villagers get quite excited when they see the progress.
In our child care program we do not only focus on the children but also on their families. This time we were able to supply seeds and fertilizer to 10 families. Our new trailer that came with the consignment from Germany was of great help in transporting the heavy load! During these days it is planting season, the long rains are about to begin. As CMI team we will also plant maize on the field next to the health center. The maize will helo to support our kids at school. Joctan, the eldest beneficiary in our Child Care Program completed school last November.
This month he attended a so called ´School Leavers´ Campaign´ with Diguna mission. During the first week the school leavers stayed on the mission station in Nairobi, where they got to know each other, learned more about Jesus and practiced some songs and small plays. For another 3 weeks they did evangelistic outreaches to schools in a remote part of Kenya. It was the first time for Joctan to be in Kenya´s capital city Nairobi. Never before had he travelled into other parts of Kenya or met youths of different tribal backgrounds. Every day he made so many new experiences! On the picture he´s seen with his brother Evans. As CMI team we enjoyed a time out during this week. We spent four days at Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. Most of us were born and raised in the Kenyan Highlands, were cultivating crops and rearing of cattle is the common way of life. The culture that results from life at the lake, e.g. fishing, boats as mode of transport, swimming, etc. was quite a new experience that evoked joy and fear as well. During the days we toured some of the Islands, went for game drive in a National Park and enjoyed really good food. We also took time to read God´s Word together and learn from it.
During this year we continue teaching PPI - Program for Pastoral Instructions every Friday morning in Kipyeto Primary School. For lower and middle classes we teach Bible Stories and Characters.
For upper Primary we use a lesson material called "Choose Life". The pupils get to know the biblical values of love, peace, justice, freedom and concern for others. They learn how to apply these values in their personal lives and in their communities. Choose Life is intended to give guidelines to youth that will equip them for moral decision-making.
Poverty, alcoholism, violence, teenage pregnancies and child labour are some of the challenges the children of Mount Elgon are facing. Without values they easily yield to pressure and make decisions which they´ll live to regret. We look forward to lively discussions in our classes!
Back to school
On 4th January our children were reporting back to school. The five children that are new in our Child Care Program have joined a boarding school. The excitement was quite high. On the one hand the children are proud to be old enough to go to a "real" school. On the other hand they get lots of things, perhaps more ever before in their life. A pupil in boarding school needs a mattress, sheets, tooth brush and many other things. For the CMI team these are the most stressful days in the year because we have to make sure, that every child has got all the requirements. Every item however tiny has to be labeled to prevent things from getting lost. New school bags The consignment we received from Germany contained lots of school bags. During the opening of the schools we could give them out to our children in the Child Care Program. They quite like their new bags!Christmas gifts Some of the supporters in our Child Care Program sent parcels with Christmas gifts for their children. Unfortunately the Kenyan Posta went on strike just before Christmas. Therefore there is quite a delay in delivery. However the delays do not lessen the joy of the children at all. They receive the parcels with great anticipation and unwrap their gifts with even greater excitement. In the past days we tried new games that the children received, read Christmas letters and replied. Today we picked yet another hip of parcels from the post office!
For good reasons we had to shorten our Christmas break. On the last day of the year our consignment from Germany finally arrived at Mount Elgon. An extensive project that took almost one year has finally come to successful completion. Many people got involved in the process right from planning, collecting and buying the different goods, packing, labeling, transporting and clearing with the customs in Kenya. Thanks to all of you!
Here at Mount Elgon we were a team of 13 people helping to offload the 40 feet container. Since we had no forklift or the like it took us 3 hours to get everything out of the container that was to return to the port. In a second step we tried to store all boxes, machines and bicycles. Today we suffer from muscles ache; however we look forward to make use of all these things here and give them out to those in need.
